“LEGO: The Piece of Resistance”

On February 7th, 2014 “The Lego Movie, formerly titled “LEGO: The Piece of Resistance“, is to be released! This cross between live action and animation will be about a young Lego minifigure’s struggle to become a MasterBuilder. As one of the writers, Phil Lord, says: “It is the story of basically a young man who doesn’t have a creative bone in his body and he has to always build things from the instructions, he’s an ‘instructions worker’. In the LEGO city, they build buildings, and it turns out in this universe it’s illegal to build apart from the instructions. So what he finds out is that he’s actually a descendant from these like super creative Jedi-type people who are called ‘Master Builders’ and he has been charged with saving the universe from being frozen together by an evil bad guy, so over the course of the movie he has to unlearn all of that lame-o, uncreative stuff and learn how to build without all of the instructions in order to save the universe (Phil Lord)”.

Though the plot sounds quite entertaining, a movie is not made by the story alone. A good story needs to have good actors. Directed by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Chris McKay with a cast including Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, and Patricia Taylor; it’s clear that “The Lego Movie” will be an excellent movie. (Thanks to IMDB and The Brickipedia for some of the info!)

The Legends Are True

LEGO’s Legends of Chima is based off a Cartoon Network show by LEGO. Basically Chima was a peaceful world without humans in it. Then the animals drank from water with CHI in it, and became sentient, bipedal beings. War broke out between the animal tribes over the control of CHI. Here’s how LEGO sums up the Chima world:

“Once a pristine, natural paradise, CHIMA has become a battle ground for eight animal tribes. Best friends are now enemies. The animals fight for control of a natural resource called CHI, a powerful element that is both a source of life and potential destruction. Only a few brave heroes in CHIMA understand the true nature of CHI, and the possible downfall of CHIMA that will result from its misuse. Their stories, and the stories of those who seek to destroy them, are known as… THE LEGENDS OF CHIMA.

For a thousand years, animal tribes have ruled the land of CHIMA. Lions, crocodiles, eagles, wolves, gorillas, ravens, rhinos and bears lived in peace. They played and worked together, cooperated and prospered – until the outbreak of the CHIMA conflicts.

As the first species to drink from the Ancient Pool of CHI, the Lions had become its sworn protector. No one had ever challenged the Lions’ custodianship of the Pool because the Lions had always been reliable and fair with the CHI. Animals throughout the land relied on the magical CHI orbs to energize their vehicles, gear, and themselves. The orbs were a power source that the Lions had always shared equally with everyone. Eventually, some of the animals got greedy. A young, rogue Crocodile prince named Cragger demanded that his tribe should receive a greater share of the powerful CHI orbs. But the Lions insisted, as they had for a thousand years, that giving too much CHI to any one tribe would upset the natural balance of CHIMA. The Lions only wanted to be fair, and to protect all of CHIMA. But the Crocodiles didn’t see it this way. A series of minor skirmishes over the Crocodiles’ share of the CHI led to bigger battles.

When the Crocodile Prince Cragger accused the Lions of getting rid of his parents and he became Crocodile King, full-scale conflict broke out between the Crocodiles and the Lions. As conflict spreads, the fate of CHIMA hangs in the balance…” (LEGO.com).

One of the awesome things about The Legends of Chima is the alliteration of the characters’ names: the lions’ names start with L’s, Ravens’ with R’s, and so on and so forth. The first wave of LEGO Chima sets was already released at the beginning of 2013. Here are the upcoming Chima sets to be released! (Thanks to the Brickipedia and LEGO.com for much of this information!)

“Thank the Maker!”

“Thank the Maker! (C-3PO)” LEGO began producing the Star Wars LEGO’s in 1999. With new film additions being released in the next several years and the continuance of the Clone Wars series, LEGO Star Wars has never been busier. Before this year is even halfway over, LEGO expects to release over a dozen new Star Wars sets, not counting the dozen+ sets released in December of 2012. This is both great and terrible for LEGO Star Wars fans. This is wonderful because it means new Jedi, clone, droid, and alien minifigures as well as new and also updated space ships and snub fighters. However, enthusiasts will be disappointed by having so many sets released in such a short time. With over two dozen sets released in just over six months, it’s financially impossible to be able to afford them all. That’s why it’s important to pick the sets you like the best. Even if you can’t buy them all, you will enjoy seeing the designs and innovations of the sets. Here are the LEGO Star Wars sets of 2013, enjoy! (Thanks to the Brickipedia for the information!)

The LEGO New Year

2012 was an exciting year for LEGO fans. Several popular themes were introduced including Lord of the Rings (LOTR), DC Super Heroes, Marvel Super Heroes, and Monster Fighters! Star Wars, Ninjago, Games, and several other awesome themes received brand new sets as well. I’m personally psyched to see new sets from Star Wars, LOTR, and Superheroes.

Some of the most anticipated sets that LEGO has announced for this year come from the Lord of the Rings series. Four sets have been announced to release in June of 2013. The Brickipedia provides more information on these new sets, which are:

The Tower of Orthanc has not been officially confirmed by LEGO. These sets appear to be from only The Fellowship of the Ring and the Return of the King. This makes sense as the previously released sets from 2012 consisted of a majority of sets from The Two Towers. It is somewhat odd why the LOTR sets are being released out of chronological order. Without the film release of The Hobbit trilogy these LEGO sets likely never would have existed. We can all look forward to seeing the new Hobbit sets, most likely towards the end of 2013!
